Grimethorpe Colliery Band have provided some of the accompaniments for the official song for Yorkshire’s Grand Depart, the start of the Tour De France. The work was commissioned by Welcome to Yorkshire, the song, a typically stirring anthem titled The Road will be an all Yorkshire affair with Alistair Griffin (singer and composer) teaming up with Kimberley Walsh (former Girls Aloud) plus string players from Leeds College of Music and stars of the film ‘Brassed Off’ The Grimethorpe Colliery Band.
Alistair, from York, has a track record of writing for major sporting events. His track ‘Just Drive’ is the title music for Sky Sports Formula 1 coverage and the BBC chose his song ‘What If’ to soundtrack Andrew Murray’s historic Wimbledon win viewed by over 6 million people.
Bob Childs speaking on behalf of the band said, ‘I was proud to attend the recording session in Leeds and hear first hand what a talent Alistair Griffin is’.
Gary Verity, Chief. Executive of ‘Welcome to Yorkshire’ said, ‘All the performers on the recording are from Yorkshire which reinforces the fact that Yorkshire is united in promoting the county and welcoming the Tour. What better way to do this than through an official song and we encourage everyone to get a copy of this unique piece of memorabilia’
‘The Road’ will be officially released in the lead up to the Grand Depart which takes place in Leeds 5th July.
