Cory receive Welsh Music Guild

Robert Childs and The Cory Band have been awarded The John Edwards Memorial Award by the Welsh Music Guild. This prize is awarded annually to an individual, organisation or institution for an outstanding contribution to Welsh music.

The Award is an annual award that can only be won once and can be withheld by the Executive if no suitable candidates present themselves. Previous winners of the award include Alun Hoddinott, Margaret Price, Cor Dyfed, the West Glamorgan Youth Orchestra, Brian Hughes, Bryan Davies, Stuart Burrows, Bryn Terfel and the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.

Whilst the awards are in recognition of the individual achievements of the recipients, the Guild Executive felt that it was fitting that they should read "Robert Childs and The Cory Band" as both are intrinsically linked.

Christopher Painter, secretary of the Welsh Music Guild conveyed the news to Bob and the Band and said that, ‘The Guild had unanimously voted that the award be a double one going to both Bob Childs and the Cory Band for their terrific work in 2008.’ As well as citing obvious achievements like outstanding contest results and top world ranking positions. The Guild also recognises the amount of work the Band does promoting Welsh composers in concerts and on CD. Mr Painter also mentioned the amount of educational out-reach the Band undertakes and especially congratulated the Band on their current partnership with The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

Speaking on behalf of the Cory Band Austin Davies (Chairman) said, ‘This is a fantastic honour and is especially welcomed in our 125th Anniversary Year. I’m so pleased that The Welsh Music Guild has recognized the hard work that we do, especially the educational work that can so often be overlooked.’

Bob Childs added, ‘I’m thrilled for the Band, this is just the boost we needed before competing at the European Championships. Being recognized by The Welsh Music Guild will spur us on even more to bring the title back home to Wales.’ Bob continued by saying, ‘when you look at the list of past recipients of The John Edwards Memorial Award it speaks volumes. I believe we are the first Brass Band to receive the award from The Welsh Music Guild and I hope we can continue impressing prestigious organisations like this with our music making.

The John Edwards Memorial Award will be presented to The Cory Band and Bob Childs at the Welsh Music Giuld’s Annual Dinner later this year.
