Vinter Special

Over the next few weeks Phillip Hunt will be presenting three special Sounds of Brass Programmes on BBC Local Radio to mark the Centenary of Gilbert Vinter. He was born on the 4th May 1909, but it was not until the early 1960’s that he burst onto the brass band scene with a series of breathtaking pieces that combined vibrant colours and moods, explored new textures and were crammed full of great tunes, new ideas and technical challenges.

With the help of interviews with Paul Hindmarsh, former BBC Radio 3 Producer and Artistic Director of The Royal Northern College of Music Festival of Brass, Tim Mutum, Brass Band Writer and Recording Historian, David Read, Player, Conductor and Adjudicator and Gilbert Vinter’s son, Dr Andrew Vinter, Phillip explores the stories behind the music and the motivation behind the man, in this tribute to one of the most important brass band composers of the twentieth century.
