The seventy
members of The Cornwall Youth Brass Band will be joined by two
outstanding musicians from The Foden’s Richardson Band for their Easter
Residential Course. The Musical Director of Foden’s, who are The
International Masters Champions, Garry Cutt and their Principal EEB
Bass, Les Neish, are the latest high profile Guests of the CYBB and will
be working with the Band for four days over the Easter Holiday,
culminating in a Gala Concert at St Michaels Church in Newquay on 24th
March at 7pm. Since its foundation in 1955 the CYBB has always sought to
bring the best Guest Conductors and Soloists to Cornwall to benefit the
young brass musicians of the County with the highest level of expertise
and experience available. Held at The Truro High School for Girls, the
Course follows the Band’s monthly Rehearsals, which are taken by the
local Tutors of the Band in preparation for the Residential Course.
GARRY CUTT.
Since graduating in the early 1980's, Garry Cutt has developed a
reputation as one of the banding worlds most respected and successful
Conductors. He was appointed Musical Director of the Grimethorpe
Colliery Band in 1991, a position he held for twelve years. The
phenomenal impact of the film "Brassed-Off" resulted in Garry leading
the band on sell-out tours, notably to Australia on three occasions. In
September 2003, he was awarded the Iles Medal by The Worshipful Company
of Musicians in recognition of his services to the Brass Band Movement.
He took up the
position of Professional Conductor with The Foden’s Richardson Band in
January 2005 and since then has won two North West Area Contests, The
English National Title in 2006 and International Masters Champions 2007.
From 2000 to 2005, Garry was the Associate Conductor of The National
Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and as well as his work with Foden’s
has returned to Grimethorpe in the role of Associate Conductor, leading
the Band in their busy Concert diary.
LES NEISH. At
the young age of 22, Les Neish, as well as playing with the Foden’s
Richardson Band, has established an international career as a Tuba and
Bass Soloist which has already taken him to venues that range from the
Marble Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia, to Finland, Holland and Malta
as well as Matt and Fred’s Jazz Bar in Manchester.
He gained a First Class Honours Degree and Professional Performance
Diploma at the Royal Northern College of Music and was awarded the
Goronwy Evans Memorial Award for outstanding brass playing at the RNCM.
As a freelance musician, he has worked with many of the leading
orchestras in the UK, including the Halle Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra
and is also a keen chamber musician playing with both the brass quintet
