Announcing the Trinity College of Music Brass Experience
2008 -
the
fifth year of the week-long festival at Trinity which aims to highlight
brass playing of all genres amongst both staff and students and to
create new partnerships with young brass players in South East London.
The festival features four main performances which focus on innovative
collaborations between internationally acclaimed artists, Trinity
students and local community members.
The festival opens with the
Philip Jones Brass Competition Final on the 25th February
(6pm, Blackheath Halls, SE3). Open to all Trinity College of Music
Brass Ensembles, the competition is named after ex-Trinity
Principal and trumpeter Philip Jones CBE, founder of the Philip Jones
Brass Ensemble. The festival celebrates his life and groundbreaking
work which paved the way for the modern brass ensemble experience. The
performance will be a vibrant mix of Trinity brass groups playing
everything from baroque to pop. The competition will be adjudicated by
the
festival’s Artist in Residence - acclaimed American trumpeter Rex
Richardson who has worked with countless artists including Benny Carter,
Ray Charles, Kurt Elling, Carl Fontana, Aretha Franklin, Jimmy Owens and
Gerald Wilson. He is Professor of trumpet and jazz trumpet at Virginia
Commonwealth University in the USA and will be running a ‘brass surgery’
for Trinity students throughout the festival.
On Tuesday 26th February at 1.05pm the
stunning Old Royal Naval College Chapel will host a recital by the
Lucerne Chamber Brass. This exciting young Swiss ensemble comprises
Basil Hubatka (Trumpet), Martin Bieri (Trumpet), Philipp
Schulze (Horn), Pirmin Rohrer (Trumbone) and Daniel Schädeli (Tuba).
Returning to Blackheath Halls, the 27th February (7pm) sees
the culmination of the inspiring creative performance project Brass
Routes involving young brass players through Trinity’s Raising
the Roof schools’ programme.
Pupils from four Greenwich primary schools: St. Patrick’s
RC Primary, Sherrington Primary, Meridian Primary and St. Margaret’s
Primary are currently taking part in weekly workshops to create their
own new music for the concert which will also include performances from
Lewisham school children,
Trinity students, Trinity Head of Brass Studies Roger Argente and Rex
Richardson. The project is supported by Greenwich and Lewisham Music
Services.
The
festival will close with the Trinity College of Music Brass Massive
2008 on the 28th February – a celebration of brass
playing with school children, students and world renowned artists
joining together for a vibrant programme including Prokofiev's
Romeo and Juliet.
Barnet Youth Brass Band will open the
concert which will continue with performances by The Symphonic Brass
ensemble, directed by Roger Argente and Tom Hammond, and students from
Virginia Commonwealth University, USA. Rex Richardson and Trinity Tuba
Professor Oren Marshall are also co-composing an innovative piece for
the concert.
The festival will
provide local children with wonderful and inspiring opportunities to
play alongside world class musicians. It is a great opportunity to
experience a wide range of brass performances from talented players of
all ages. For more information please see
