Triple Gold

A unique concert will take place at The Hall for Cornwall on Sunday November 18th when three of the finest Youth Bands to be found anywhere, Camborne, Mount Charles and St Dennis have combined to present a special Concert to demonstrate the outstanding level of musicianship that they have achieved. To have risen to this level has taken a great deal of commitment and dedication, not just from the players themselves, but from their Musical Directors, Tutors, Parents, Guardians and all those involved in the organisation of their individual Bands. Each Band will play a selection of pieces on their own, combining in the second half for a massed Band Finale of some 120 young musicians.

Brass Bands in Cornwall have a long and distinguished pedigree, reaching back to the 1830’s when ‘all brass instrumentation bands’ were first recorded in the County. Since then several hundred bands have been identified as having existed, with almost fifty still bringing the special sound of Cornish Brass Music to an appreciative public. Young people have always learnt brass instruments, how else would have bands have survived, but in Cornwall there has also been a great tradition of Youth Bands, mainly as part of a Senior Band organisation but also in some cases as a stand alone band.

In recent years the County has been recognised nationally as a hot bed of Youth Bands, as they have travelled far and wide winning major competitions, with their musicians also gaining many individual Solo Awards. It was the tremendous and significant success of these three Bands at The 2007 National Youth Brass Band Championships in April this year that has led to this Celebration Concert. All three Bands entered the Community Section of the Championships, which is for bands independent of schools, education authorities or county music services and allows musicians up to the age of twenty. With fourteen entrants from all over the country, this was the largest section at the Championships, which were held at The Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. In an unprecedented result all three gained Gold Awards, the first time in the Competition that three Bands from a single County had achieved recognition for such a high standard of performance.

The Bands taking part are,

Camborne Youth Band, Musical Director, Alan Pope.

Mount Charles Youth Band, Musical Director, Simon Dobson.

St Dennis Youth Band, Musical Director, Brian Minear.
