Leyland resident composer

Young Cornish composer Simon Dobson has been announced as the new composer-in-residence to the Leyland Band. The Royal College of Music graduate is said to be ‘delighted and honoured with the opportunity’ and is ‘looking forward to working at close quarters with Leyland and its conductor Russell Gray.’

On the appointment, Russell Gray commented, ‘The Leyland Band is very excited to have an up-and-coming composer like Simon associated with the band and we are looking forward to a fruitful partnership with him.’ Russell continued, ‘At Leyland, we believe that bands such as our own – positioned at the forefront of the movement and involved in prestigious events in the UK and abroad – have a responsibility to support young composers and initiate such projects. Moreover, Simon is a great guy and we enjoy playing his music very much.’

Dobson – whose music is published by Faber Music Ltd – has commenced the appointment in ceremonial fashion with a fanfare for band entitled Clarion Alarum – Fanfare No. 1. Leyland will premiere the work at the Regent Hall Brass Arts Festival on Friday 19 October. Tickets for the concert can be obtained on 01223 234 090 or 07710 505 689.
