in the extreme south-east of England we
don’t often get a chance to hear the great internationally-acclaimed
Brass Bands. And it is very unusual for a chamber music society,
normally presenting soloists and small ensembles, to invite one of them
to perform for them. So we are especially pleased and proud that the
remarkable Cory Band, under the outstanding direction of Dr. Robert
Childs, has agreed to play for the Sittingbourne Music Society, in a
programme of major Brass Band classics, including Elgar’s Severn Suite,
Ireland’s A Downland Suite, the Spitfire Prelude and Fugue of Walton,
and Cloudcatcher Fells by John McCabe.
The programme reflects the inspiration of
the British landscape, from the Lake District (Cloudcatcher Fells) and
the Severn, to the Kent Downs and the wartime skies above Kent.
For those of you who don’t know,
Sittingbourne is on the A2 in Kent, half-way between London and Dover.
The concert takes place in the Millennium Hall of Fulston Manor School,
Brenchley Road, Sittingbourne ME10 4EG, on Saturday 24th
November 2007, beginning at 7.45 pm. Refreshments will be available, but
not food. Tickets are £12 (£1 for under 18s) and can be purchased from
Swade Music, Roman Square, Sittingbourne, on the door, or by post from
Mrs Jeane Holmes, 106 College Road, Sittingbourne ME10 1LQ, Kent. Please
write stating tickets required, and enclosing a cheque made out to
Sittingbourne Music Society, plus SAE.
By coincidence, on the previous day, 23rd
November 2007, the popular locally-based BAE Systems Band will also be
performing, at the Wyvern Hall, Central Avenue, Sittingbourne (also at
7.45 pm), in a concert of traditional and popular brass band music, thus
making it a remarkable weekend for brass bands in the North Kent area.
