New resident at St Austell

Following the departure of David Loukes the St Austell Town Band has appointed Aaron Harvey as Resident Conductor to work with a team of Professional Conductors.

Aaron began playing the Cornet with the Mount Charles band in St Austell, Cornwall in 1974. After four years he joined the famous St.Dennis band, moving through the ranks of the youth and senior bands to attain the position of principal cornet, a highlight of which was a performance at the National Finals in the Royal Albert Hall in 1985.

Three years later Aaron moved to the principal cornet position with the Bodmin Town band beginning a very successful period, as the band grew in status gaining a reputation as one of the UK’s foremost combinations. The band competed at most of the major contests, including five appearances at the National Finals in the Royal Albert Hall and made many broadcasts and recordings as well as performing at prestigious concerts throughout the country. During his time with Bodmin he also accepted the position of bandmaster, deputising in the absence of the Resident conductor.

It was through this and his work as a tutor with the Cornwall Youth Brass Band, that he caught the conducting ‘bug’ and in January 2003 he was very pleased to accept the position of MD of the St Breward Band who are well known in Cornwall for their concert work, particularly during the busy summer season, from May to September. After just over four busy years at the helm of St Breward, he resigned his position at the beginning of 2007.

Aaron then returned to the cornet, in order to play with the St Austell Band for the West of England area in March and has conducted the band on numerous occasions over the last few months.

“Though St Austell born and bred, it is only in this year that I have had any direct involvement with my home town band. I have found a young, up and coming team with undoubted potential, all determined to play at their best and also continue to improve their individual and group performance.

I am looking forward to the challenges that leading a Championship Band brings, not least being able to work alongside some of the leading conductors and players in the brass band field and to maintain and strive for even higher standards.” said Aaron.

The band who already have a number of exciting projects to work towards over the next 12 months are delighted to welcome Aaron to his new role and are looking forward to a long and successful relationship.

An announcement will be made soon on the appointment of the bands Professional Conductors.
