Musicianship Tests abolished for Medal and Diploma exams
After consultation with teachers and examiners, and careful
consideration of the views and
thoughts which arose from these discussions, the VCM is pleased to
announce that with effect from September 2007, there will be no
Musicianship Tests for either Medal or Diploma practical music
examinations.
This
will bring VCM more fully into line with other major examining boards
which no longer requirean aural component in Diploma Examinations, and
will no doubt be a very popular decision withboth teachers and
candidates
Musicianship Tests to remain
for Grades 1 to 8
The existing Musicianship Tests will continue to be an important part of
the Grade examinations.
Mark
Schemes to change
The
10% of marks previously awarded for musicianship will be allocated to
the playing of the
pieces in Performance Diploma and all Medal examinations, and to the
Teaching Questions in Teaching Diplomas, thus underlining the essential
difference between Performance and Teaching Diplomas i.e. higher level
of playing is expected in Performers Diplomas, which must be both
technically assured and show flair and a sense of style, while in the
Teaching sections competent, accurate and musical playing is required,
but performances do not have to reach the level of the Performing
sections, because in Teaching Examinations candidates are marked mainly
on their ability to teach their instrument effectively, and also the
ability to motivate and inspire their students.
Review
Musicianship Tests for Grade Examinations are currently being reviewed,
and modified and
streamlined tests will be announced in due course. As always, we
welcome your views on this proposal
