On Saturday 16th June St Breward Band under the musical
direction of Gary Lannie took part in the annual open air West of
England Bandsmans Festival at Bugle in Cornwall. They entered the 4th
Section and competed against 3 other Cornish bands.
After playing the set test piece, 'A Psalm for all
Nations' written by Eric Ball, they were later awarded first place with
183 marks by the adjudicator Mr Dennis Wilby who commented on the
excellent standard of playing in the 4th section. Their solo euphonium
player, Geoff Swann was awarded the Best Player of the section with The
Jack Hooper Memorial Trophy and the band received 'The Boundy Brothers
Challenge Cup.'
This is the second excellent result the band have
received this year, in both contests they have competed in. The first
being the area contest held at Torquay back in March which they were
placed 2nd out of approximately 20 other bands and earnt them the place
to compete in the National 4th section finals to be held in Harrogate in
September this year competing against other band sfrom all over the
country.
