Brass Band Summer School

Philip Biggs is delighted to announce that the Brass Band Summer School will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2007 at one of the country’s top public schools - Uppingham. Uppingham Public School situated in the beautiful county of Rutland in Central England and the Brass Band Summer School will take place from Sunday 12th to Saturday 18th August under the musical direction of Richard Evans.

Explaining the rationale for the relocation from Bromsgrove School, Administator Philip Biggs said that since the move from Brookes University, Oxford to Bromsgrove in 1999, the Summer School had developed and grown to a size where new and state-of-the-art facilities had to be found. In 2006 the total number of delegates attending the School was 110, which is thought to be the largest Summer School of its type. Philip went on to say: “I have known of the superb facilities at Uppingham School for some while. It is renowned for its music and I have always thought it would be the ideal venue for the Summer School. With three music departments and the recent opening of a £5.5 million recital hall and individual practice areas, this will give the Brass Band Summer School the type of facilities that any music group would yearn for.”  Uppingham School even has its
own Public House!

Another major factor for the move is the Director of Music at Uppingham School, Stephen Williams - himself a cornet player. Stephen commented: “It is tremendous to be able to welcome the Brass Band Summer School and Richard Evans to Uppingham School for the first time next summer. I am confident that this is the beginning of a long and joyful relationship. We can offer an environment that is ideal for inspiring music-making and facilities that are second-to-none in terms of both excellence and breadth. This is a beautiful place, surrounded by picturesque villages, lovely countryside and many outstanding pubs!  I’m sure it will be an unforgettable week.”

The music staff, led by Richard Evans, will be Alan Morrison and Brian Taylor (Cornets), Owen Farr (Horns), David Childs (Euphoniums and Baritones), Nick Hudson (Trombones), Steve Sykes (Tubas) and Paul Lovatt-Cooper (Percussion).

Philip concluded: “This is the perfect venue for the Brass Band Summer School and will ensure that delegates enjoy facilities of the highest possible standard and will guarantee the future success of the longest running Summer School.”
