In their forthcoming
concert with internationally acclaimed trumpeter Geoffrey Payne,
Hawthorn Band will pay tribute to two masters of the 20th
Century.
Many who visit this
site will remember Hawthorn Band’s need to reschedule their July
concert with Geoffrey due to the sad passing of Maestro Iwaki.
“Romantico” will now take place on Saturday November 25th
at the Methodist Ladies College commencing at 7.30pm with details
available soon
Hawthorn will
present a work by Claude Debussy and arranged for Brass Band that
will pay tribute to Maestro Iwaki with conductor Peter Sykes saying
“Maestro Iwaki’s interpretation of the French repertoire influenced
me enormously throughout my career in music and is paramount in my
efforts stylistically for the future of Hawthorn Band.”
Another 20th
century great has passed away in recent days, English composer Sir
Malcolm Arnold. On hearing of Sir Malcolm’s passing Peter Sykes
decided to add to our November program Sir Malcolm’s mighty “Fantasy
for Brass Band.” A fitting tribute to a force in English Brass
playing and composition, as Peter was a member of Willoughby when
they both premiered the “Fantasy” here in Australia and won the NSW
State Title and now Peter is with Hawthorn, the Band that first won
an Australian National Band Title with “Fantasy For Brass Band.”
Of course in
addition to the tributes we will have Geoffrey Payne performing, all
in all making for a great night.
