Bands impress at Bugle

Both St Dennis Senior and Youth Bands competed at Bugle contest yesterday. After weeks of hard work from the bands, they set out to impress in style.

The day commenced at 10am with the traditional march through the village of Bugle. The Senior Band marched down in fine style playing 'The March of the Herald' with the bands' officers and Youth Band members marching in front and behind the band . The band gained 2nd place in the deportment section receiving the 'Hawke Challenge Shield'.

The Youth Band performed Philip Sparkes' Kaleidoscope. They gave an outstanding performance of the work which showed great soloist work from all principal positions, in particular Kayleigh Rowe who was awarded 'Best Cornet Player' in the Youth Section receiving the 'John Hambley Memorial Trophy'. The adjudicator (David Horsfield) said that the Youth section was the champagne moment of the day and was a section which could have gone either way between the two competing bands. St Dennis received the 'Gareth Roberts Challenge Cup' for the runners-up in the section being pipped to the post by Mt Charles Youth Band by one point.

The Senior Band competed in the 1st Section playing the march 'Viva Birkinshaw' followed by 'Music for the Common Man' by Kenneth Downie. The band gained 1st place for both the march and the set test piece receiving the ‘Ford Knight Memorial Trophy’ and also the ‘F J P Richards Memorial Trophy’. The best player award for the section went to the bands’ principal cornet Kayleigh Rowe who also received the best Solo Cornet of the day.

The A.R. Trudgian Youth Awards (Nominated by the committee of the Cornwall Youth Brass Band) were awarded to Claire Parkyn (Baritone) and Andrew Julian (Soprano).

Everyone will be sorry to say goodbye to Miles Johns (Bass), who will be joining the Marines in September and they wish him the best of luck in his chosen career.

The band now looks forward to a busy summer of engagements and preparing for the National Finals in Harrogate in September.
