YYM Hull Open Day

Yorkshire Young Musicians (YYM) - the organisation which provides training for exceptional young musicians aged 8 to 18 -  is to open a second centre in Hull in September 2006. Young musicians, their parents and teachers will have a chance to find out more about this exciting development at an Open Day to be held at the Albermarle Music Centre, Hull, on Saturday 13 May 2006.

YYM offers its students a complete musical education: specialist tuition, classes to develop musical skills, and opportunities for playing and talking with like-minded friends. At the Open Day, which runs from 9.45 am, there will be a chance for youngsters to talk to existing students and to take part in some typical activities that are all part of the YYM experience. YYM Director Penny Stirling will be joined by guest tutors Richard Ingham (YYM Woodwind Advisor) and Dougie Scarf (of Opera North- YYM’s Chairman), to explain how YYM works and to answer questions from parents and potential students.

YYM has been operating successfully from its Leeds base in the Leeds College of Music for nearly eighteen months. Penny Stirling is very pleased that the organisation is now poised to expand into Hull.

“YYM offers a fantastic opportunity for aspiring young musicians who want to give music a more prominent role in their lives. I am delighted that by opening this centre in the Hull we are making it much easier for even more young people to benefit from our presence. There are many out there who would thrive on what we have to offer: the opportunity to meet up with like-minded young musicians; the chance of an hour’s 1:1 tuition a week on their first instrument; and the opportunity to have a learning plan tailor-made just for them. And with government financial support available, this opportunity is within everyone’s reach. Students can get government support not only for their fees, but sometimes also for such elements as instrument and travel costs.”

Auditions

Anyone who wishes to apply to YYM for entry in September can arrange to take an audition in the afternoon of the Open Day on 13 May. Advice auditions can also be arranged for anyone who is unsure whether YYM is the right place for them.

Financial support available

YYM is open to musicians of all styles and genres and offers grants to those eligible for support from the DfES’ Music and Dance Scheme.
