Cambridge appoint Bassano

The City of Cambridge Brass Band is delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Peter Bassano as their new resident Musical Director.

Peter is well-renowned in the world of music, not only in the brass band world but also in the classical world.

Throughout his career he has worked as both conductor and performer, interspersed with periods of study with Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Elgar Howarth and Bramwell Tovey. He is Music Director of The Gentlemen of the Chappell, The Equale Baroque Players, Wendover Choral Society and Oxford Touring Opera and has appeared as guest conductor with the Helsinki Philharmonic, Royal Omani Symphony, Royal Philharmonic as well as at many conservatoires, choirs and bands around the world.

Peter studied trombone and singing at the Royal College of Music, where after many years as a member of London's Philharmonia Orchestra he was appointed a professor and became a staff conductor and Head of Brass Faculty in 1990, a post he held until August 2004.

Peter has worked with band legends, such as Grimethorpe Colliery Band, Besses o th’ Barn and Brighouse and Rastrick.

A spokesman on behalf of the band said, “This is a very exciting time for the band and we are all looking forward to working with Peter.  It is not everyday someone like Peter Bassano walks up to you and asks if he can be your Musical Director.  To be honest, we are stunned, but highly delighted that Peter has shown interest in the band and we will do everything in our power to make sure that this opportunity is maximized and that the band reaches its full potential. It is also a very exciting time for music lovers and brass band enthusiasts, as Peter Bassano will be regularly conducting the band in Cambridge and the surrounding area.”

The band has also expressed a strong desire to find a sponsor. There has never been a more exciting time to have your company associated with such an important name in the business!

If anyone is interested in speaking to the band at this exciting time, either as a player, a sponsor or to book the band for their forthcoming event, please contact the bandmaster on: 07704 885743 or email to: manager@cambridgeband.org.uk .  More information can be found about the band on www.cambridgeband.org.uk.
