Doctors make music

Two Musical Doctors will be combining their talents at the Christmas Course of The Cornwall Youth Brass Band. The sixty strong Band will be holding their four day residential Course at The Truro High School for Girls starting on 27th December. The Course will be directed by Dr Robert Childs, who will be taking time off from conducting The Buy As You View Band (formerly The Cory Band), recent National and British Open Champions.

As Director of Brass Band Studies at The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, Music Director of The National Youth Band of Wales and a tutor with The National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain he is uniquely qualified to harness the enthusiasm and talent of the young Cornish players.

To end their Golden Jubilee Year the Band are particularly featuring the works of their Musical Advisor, Dr Goff Richards, on the course. A former member of the Band when a young Trombone player, Goff has since become known all over the world as a foremost composer and arranger of music for brass band with several hundred works to his credit. Many reflect his pride in his Cornish origins, in particular Mythic Trevithick written in honour of the great Cornish engineer, and Three Saints, inspired by Saints from the locality of his home village of St Minver.

Both these works will be included in the end of Course Concert, which will be held at 7pm on Friday December 30th at New County Hall in Truro. The Concert will also feature, as Guest Cornet Soloist, another former player with The Cornwall Youth Brass Band, Jamie Prophet. Born in 1980 Jamie started his career with The Bodmin Town Band and has gone on to become one of the most exciting trumpet players of his generation. The International Trumpet Guild described him as, “ displaying a great overall mastery of the trumpet in terms of sound, technique and stamina, in addition to his terrific musicianship”. Now the Associate Principal Trumpet of The BBC Philharmonic Orchestra he is looking forward to returning home to play once again in his native county.
