Crowd of thousands!

On Saturday 5 November the United Co-op Yorkshire Brass Band performed to a capacity crowd of 25,004 people when it gave the pre-match entertainment and performed the National Anthems for the Great Britain v. Australia match of the Gillette Tri-Nations Rugby League series at the JJB Stadium, Wigan.

Despite the pouring rain, the band gave a first-class performance under musical director Kevin Wadsworth of both country’s National Anthems as well as Land of Hope Glory and Rule Britannia in which it accompanied English National Opera soloist David Stephenson. Whilst David (who the band worked with in 2004 during the Tri-Nations Rugby League series) performed the home team’s National Anthem, the band accompanied Australian tenor soloist Paul O’Neill in Advance Australia Fair.

Said band manager Tabby Clegg: “It was once again a privilege to perform to such a crowd at such an event and not only did we perform to the live crowd in the stadium, the band was also featured on Sky TV, BBC TV and BBC radio. Playing to such a crowd is really different from your everyday concert and you get a real buzz from such an experience. The band is hoping that next year it will once again be invited to perform during the Tri-nations series.”
