At its recent AGM,
Hawthorn Band has elected its new committee and leadership group to
commence a new and exciting stage in its development. With his
exemplary display of experience and musicality, the band has
reappointed Howard Ward as its Musical Director for 2006. Howard
took over the role as MD in February this year and displayed his
capability to motivate and prepare the band under pressure. The
band is also privileged to have appointed Peter Sykes and Paul
Gunning as its President and Vice President.
Peter Sykes began playing and studying with his great mentor Peter
Walmsley and was a member of the Willoughby Band prior to his 16
year tenure as Principal Tubist with the Melbourne Symphony
Orchestra. During his years with the orchestra Peter was also
responsible for teaching many great Tuba and Euphonium players,
along with an unparalleled achievement of commissioning and
premiering in excess of 20 original Australian compositions. Peter
produced many premiere concerts with Solitaire Tubas, Southern Brass
and Kew Band, with such greats as Tommy Tycho, Brian May, Barry
McKimm and Tony Gould. In recent years Peter has undertaken
numerous motivational and leadership courses while working as a
design, sales and marketing consultant and now brings to our
organisation a strong musical, artistic and people base that will
insure his “Make it happen” reputation may continue within our
ensemble.
Paul Gunning is
a member of the RAAF
Central Band where he
is Principal Tubist, he also manages special projects, operational logistics, as
well as personnel management and leadership coaching. Paul commenced
playing with the Stawell Brass Band and over time won numerous State
and National solo competitions. He was also a member of the
inaugural 1979 State Youth Band. Paul has also appeared regularly as
guest Principal Tuba with the Melbourne Symphony, Orchestra Victoria
and has also played with the Adelaide Symphony and recording
extensively for film, television and radio.
Hawthorn is currently
enjoying a transformation its development to include high profile
engagements and extending it profile within the community and
beyond. Other focuses of the new committee is to nurture the
development of its players, improve its resources and to continue
seeking options to improve the bandroom.
