Sunday 14 August, 4.05pm
Sunday Bandstand - 1 of 4
John Wallace presents the first of four programmes of the world's best brass
and military band music. This week he looks at the development and history
of traditional brass bands with a visit to the Dalmellington Band in
Ayrshire, one of Scotland’s most historic and community-focussed brass
bands, and talks to Frank Renton about how brass bands are continuing to
attract audiences.
Sunday 21 August, 4.05pm
Sunday Bandstand - 2 of 4
John Wallace looks at the use of brass bands in the church and especially
The Salvation Army, which has developed a sophisticated and diverse
repertoire, while retaining its core religious function - and provided a
training ground for many of the world's leading professional brass players.
Featuring music from Britain's leading Salvation Army bands and a visit to
the Bellshill Salvation Army Band in Lanarkshire as they take part in Sunday
morning worship and open-air evangelism.
Sunday 28 August, 4.05pm
Sunday Bandstand - 3 of 4
John Wallace discovers how contesting came to be such a big factor in the
life and survival of brass bands, and what drives players today to work so
hard to achieve contest success. The programme visits the West Lothian
Festival of Brass entertainment contest and discovers how the contest
repertoire has developed, plus Scottish composer Kenneth Downie gives a
unique insight into writing a demanding test piece by guiding us through
St Magnus, commissioned for last year's European Championships.
Sunday 4 September, 4.05pm
Sunday Bandstand - 4 of 4
In the final programme of the series, John Wallace looks at the role and
function of military bands, following the Band of HM Royal Marines
(Scotland) as they take part in commemorations to mark the end of World War
II. Featuring music from many of the UK's most famous military bands,
demonstrating music which covers a range of activities from marching,
through a wide range of ceremonial functions, to entertainment and
concert-giving. |
