The memory of Shaun Thomas is to be
perpetuated in a trust fund which has been set up by The Cornwall Music
Service, supported by Trevada Music. The Fund will annually present an
instrument to the young brass player in the Cornwall who is judged to
have the most outstanding ability and potential.
The presentation of the first Shaun Thomas
Memorial Award, a Conn trombone, was made on July 1st by John Harries,
Head of The Music Service, to 13 year old Morrision Cole at a special
Assembly at his School, Penryn College. The presentation was attended by
Morrision’s parents, Ramon and Miranda, as well as Shaun’s widow Gayle,
her two children and Shaun’s mother, Margaret, with representatives of
the Brass Band movement in Cornwall.
At the presentation
Morrision used his new instrument to play a Sonatina for Trombone by
Serocki, which he is at present preparing for his Grade 8 examination.
He was a pupil of Shaun’s and plays with Pendennis Brass from Falmouth
as well as being a member of The National Children’s Brass Band, The
Cornwall Youth Orchestra and National Children’s Orchestra. He was
accompanied on the piano by Jill Harries, Head of Music at the College,
which is a hotbed of music making of all kinds. In introducing the
presentation to the pupils and guests the Head Teacher, Marie Hunter,
spoke of Shaun’s outstanding talents as a euphonium player, conductor
and teacher and aptly summed him up as, “a real motivator of young
people”. It is good to know that the name of this self effacing giant of
music will continue to be remembered in a way he would surely approve
of.
