Fodens go to Bollywood

On Wednesday 13 July, the roof of Lichfield Cathedral is set to be raised by a Bollywood Brass Extravaganza as part of the Lichfield Festival.  British and Indian musical cultures come together when the hot horn section and funky drummers of the astounding Bollywood Brass Band get a full brass backing from current British Open champions Foden’s Richard Band, one of England’s best-known brass bands.

Brass band favourites will be interspersed with arrangements of Bollywood film classics, including the music of Bollywood legend A R Rahman, composer of Bombay Dreams.

The Bollywood Brass Band is the UK’s first Indian wedding brass band, playing hits from Indian films and bhangra songs.  The band arose out of a 1992 collaboration with the Shyam Brass Band from Jabalpur, India and has evolved into a uniquely London mix of Hindi film hits, bhangra rhythms and brass arrangements, with flavours from jazz, world music, and the thriving UK dance remix scene.  The Bollywood Band performs on and off-stage at world music and street music festivals, cultural festivals like Diwali and Milad, and, of course, weddings.

Foden’s Richardson Band, within the top five premier league bands for the past 10 years, is current British Open Champion and, as an example of its successes in the international field, 2004 US Open Champion.  Formed as Foden’s Motor Works Band by Edwin Foden in Sandbach in 1902, the band has maintained an enviable record since those early days, achieving championship section status as long ago as 1909.

There’s fantastic value for students who turn up at the door for any festival event – best-available seat for only £5.00.  For full details visit www.lichfieldfestival.org (you can book online) or call the box office on 01543 412121
