Established by John Henry Iles (Master
1932-1933) the Iles Medal is awarded annually in recognition of services
to the brass band movement.
Paul Hindmarsh was
introduced to music through the brass bands of the Salvation Army. A
graduate of Birmingham University, he was much in demand during the late
1970’s and 1980’s as a tenor soloist, including Edinburgh and the BBC
Proms, regular broadcasts and recordings. Since 1985 he has been a
producer for the BBC in Manchester, working across a range of programmes
for Radio 3. He is now Senior Music Producer, responsible among other
things for Radio 3’s brass programmes and for the highly successful
series Discovering Music.
Paul has
also published many new editions of English music of the 20th
Century, majoring in the music of Frank Bridge, Benjamin Britten and
Wilfred Heaton. He maintains an active interest in many aspects of
British music, including the brass band and is much in demand as
producer, author and occasionally conductor. Paul spent three
rewarding years as Musical Director of Besses o’ th’ Barn Band in the
early 1990’s. In 1994 he established The Brass Band Heritage Trust to
“preserve the past, promote the present and foster the future” of the
brass band movement in Britain. As part of its support for young brass
players the BBHT managed the National Youth Brass Band Championships for
six years. Since 1990, Paul has commissioned through BBC Radio 3 and the
BBHT over thirty new works for brass band, including a number of major
contest pieces. He is currently writing the biography of Wilfred Heaton
and plans to write a study of the brass band repertoire of the last 100
years. |
