Film and TV Composer invests back in young talent

A new scholarship programme has been developed at Leeds College of Music, through a partnership with virtuoso composer and musician, Alan Hawkshaw, to help the College retain musical standards and secure the best musical talent.

The scholarship programme, called The Alan Hawkshaw Foundation, will support gifted students on LCM's undergraduate music performance programmes of study. Awards will be made to students who will study full time at LCM on the BA (Hons) Music Studies and Jazz Studies for the following principle study instruments; Trombone, Tuba, Bassoon, French Horn, Oboe, Double Bass and Piano.

Alan Hawkshaw, a successful composer of television and film scores, received an Ivor Novello for Best Film Score for the film Silent Witness and has composed musical scores for the hit TV series Love Hurts and themes for the Channel 4 News and Countdown. He has also decided to annually donate 10% of the Countdown royalties to the College to further the education and training of students.

He comments: "The foundation has been established to put investment back into the industry by supporting gifted young musicians. Early in my music career I could not afford academic training and hopefully this foundation will give youngsters opportunities I didn't have access to. Having been born and brought up in Leeds I know that it is a fantastic city to nurture these musicians of tomorrow and I hope that this annual donation will go some way to developing that outstanding musical talent."

David Holt, Principal of Leeds College of Music comments: "The College is extremely grateful for the funding which will help it to train future musicians. The bursary has been specifically programmed to encourage and support the musical education of students who play the "rarer breed" instrument."

Successful applicants will be awarded the £1500 annual bursary throughout the three-year programme of study and will address students with most financial need. Scholarships will be provisionally awarded upon receiving an offer through the UCAS application procedure and will be confirmed once enrolment has commenced.

John Dankworth, CBE, one of Britain's best-known jazz musicians, composers and commentators and Leeds North West MP, Harold Best have recently become a patrons of the Alan Hawkshaw Foundation. The foundation is also working with the PRS Foundation Partnership to contribute funding to the National Film and TV School (NFTS) by way of scholarships for composition.
