Granite City appoint Composer in residence

Granite City Brass and their Musical Director David James are extremely pleased and proud to announce that Darrol Barry has accepted the invitation to be Composer in Residence to the Band.

When announcing Mr Barry’s acceptance to the band, David James was thrilled that the band had been so privileged to acquire such a phenomenally talented composer and arranger to be associated with the band.

DJ stated that having collaborated with Mr Barry over the last three months he had become even more aware of the superb musicianship that is Darrol Barry, and the brass band world are only aware of part of this man’s talent. He continued; I have had the pleasure to hear two of Darrol’s major works, Requiem and October Symphony which would test the finest of our bands and their musicianship; as well as being rewarding to the listener; quite rare in modern composers. These works will put him with the top echelon of composers, never mind brass band composers.

Its a great honour and privilege to accept the position of Composer in Residence to the Granite City Brass, it's a bonus that their Musical Director is David James, a fine conductor and musician whom I first met in the 1970's when he was cornet tutor and I was a poor euphonium student on the groundbreaking Band Musicianship Course at Salford. I was very impressed by his drive and enthusiasm (not just for the cornet students) and our recent reunion, albeit on the internet, tells me he is as passionate as ever!!
