Besses O’th
Barn announce three music associates who will compose and work with the
band, promoting new works for brass band.
Besses O’th
Barn brass band are well known for pioneering new works, right from the
early days when Alexander Owen and John Henry Iles were associated with the
band. More recently the band has commissioned or premiered works such as
Images (John McCabe), Of Knights and Castles (Ray Premru),
Australian Fantasy (Gordon Langford) and concertos for tuba by both
Edward Gregson and Joseph Horovitz. It is with this illustrious history that
the band and MD Jonathan Corry invites three skilled composers in the guise
of Dorothy Gates, Paul Drury and Daniel Basford.
Dorothy
Gates hails from Belfast, but now resides in New York where she works in the
SA music editorial department she has had many works recorded and performed
by bands such as the New York Staff Band, The International Staff Band and
the much celebrated Hannaford Street Silver Band. After gaining a Bachelor
and Masters degrees in music Dorothy worked with great composers such as
Stephen Bulla and also played in the jazz trombone ensemble “Spiritual to
the Bone”.
Scotsman
Paul Drury began his musical career within the SA on tuba and became
principal tuba of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and National
Youth Orchestra of Scotland. Paul also performed as a concerto soloist with
the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. An avid bandsman, Paul plays with the
Unison Kinneil band and has had many works published by the SA, in fact his
march “Jubilee” is the title track of the latest International Staff Band
recording.
Daniel
Basford is a young man who learnt piano, cello, bassoon and percussion
before turning to composition. He is just entering his fourth year of a Bmus
course at the Royal Northern College of Music with the mainstream composer
David Horne. His recent works include “Riot for Orchestra”, “Concerto for
Saxophone”, “Threads for seven players”, first performed at the RNCM in
February 2004 and several works for symphonic wind band. Already Daniel has
produced two wonderful works for brass band including “Xavier fanfare” (with
organ) and a very fresh and original arrangement of the famous Ulster
melody, “Londonderry Air”.
MD Jonathan
Corry and Besses are thrilled with having such composers associated with the
band and eagerly look forward to working with them and pioneer more new
works for brass band. |
