Woodfalls celebrate 130 years

On Saturday 26th June the South West Trains Woodfalls Band took to the stage at the City Hall, Salisbury to celebrate 130 years of making brass band music, but first, The Woodfalls Junior band gave a demonstration of just how the band’s enviable longevity is achieved, i.e. by teaching its young people - their warm-up performance was one to really whet the appetite.

The concert started at 7.30 with the South West Trains Woodfalls Band demonstrating that this is a band in fine form and still basking in its recent success of 4th place at the "All England Masters". The Risca Male Choir from South Wales then followed with a consummate performance that complimented the brass like a fine wine. The half closed with a ‘mature’ performance from its band of 1967, …..there may be snow on the roof but there’s still a fire burning in the grate - this band stole the show before inviting the current band to join them in a performance of the Cossack. The second half mirrored the first but with the old boys now seated in the packed audience. The 4th movement from Saint-Sean’s Organ Symphony brought the show to a close before the friends of Woodfalls Band retired to the foyer to enjoy a buffet and a drink with members both old and new.

Sunday morning and a few members of each band, now including the Woodfalls Concert Brass, joined forces to accompany the hymn singing at the adjacent Methodist Chapel in Woodfalls – this, after all, was the reason for forming the band 130 years ago at the foundation of the new chapel. The chapel’s 130th anniversary service was now a timely moment for the band to give thanks for not only one Woodfalls Band but, now that the old boys have reformed, four – all alive and well and still playing in Woodfalls.

Stop Press: This week we can announce that the contracts have been signed for another concert with Acker Bilk MBE. The "We Will Remember Them" concert takes place on Friday 12th November. There is an early-bird offer so you save £1 and the British Legion gets £1 for every ticket purchased before 20 September – call the box office now on 01722327676. Last year’s concert was extremely well supported and this year we are hoping for our first ever sell out of the 900 seater City Hall.
