Lichfield Cathedral is hosting an evening of
music and song from 7.30pm on Saturday 12 June, and not only will lovers of
brass band music and choir singing enjoy the event, cancer charity, Marie
Curie Cancer Care and the Cathedral Music Fund are set to benefit too.
Midlands Co-op sponsors the Ratby Co-operative
Brass Band, which is part of a 120-strong organisation of players aged 7-70
years old. The band has been eager to perform at Lichfield Cathedral and its
musicians are delighted to be making their debut in June.
The Ratby Co-operative Band will team up with
the Cathedral Choir to perform ‘O, Clap Your Hands’ by Vaughan Williams and
Stanford’s ‘Te Deum’, as well as several well known pieces by Wagner,
Shostakovitch and Strauss.
Guest conductor, Michael Fowles, said: “It will
be an honour and a pleasure for the band to play in such wonderful
surroundings. To share the stage with the Cathedral Choir is, of course, an
opportunity to perform with musicians of an exceptional standard, which the
band is looking forward to immensely. Music has been chosen to not only
maximise the fine acoustic of the Cathedral but also ensure that for
performers and audience alike it will be a night to remember.”
Canon Charles Taylor, presentor of Lichfield
cathedral, said: “We are equally as excited as the band to be part of what
promises to be an excellent evening of entertainment. The rehearsals are
going extremely well and I’m delighted that Marie Curie and the Cathedral
Music Fund are set to benefit from the event too.”
Tickets for the event are priced at £10 each,
including a complimentary glass of wine, and are available from the
Cathedral Shop in Cathedral Close or by sending a cheque payable to The
Ratby Co-operative Band, to Sheralyn Newman, 20 Mill Drive, Ratby,
Leicestershire LE6 0JH. Tickets will also be available on the door, subject
to availability.
All profits from the event will be shared
equally between Midlands Co-op’s corporate charity, Marie Curie Cancer Care
and the Cathedral Music Fund.
