Co-op takes to the skies

THE United Co-op Yorkshire Brass Band has confirmed that it has accepted an invite from the New Zealand Brass Band Association to compete in the 125th New Zealand Brass Band Championships, taking place in Wellington, New Zealand in March 2005.
Said Tabby Clegg for the band: "It is a great honour to represent the British banding community in the New Zealand Brass Band Championships and the whole band has committed itself to the trip. The band will depart the week after the Yorkshire Regional Championships and spend three days in Singapore before flying on to New Zealand. In all, United Co-op Yorkshire will give five concerts as well as competing in the contest over Easter week.
"However, a trip like this comes at a price and the total cost of the trip is £73,000 to take the party of 53 people. The band is aiming to raise the funds by the end of this year, which will mean a great deal of effort in organising fund raising events such as a Summer Ball, a Banders Christmas Party and a five-a-side football competition, which will be opened up to any bands and groups that would like to enter. It is a huge target to reach, but the band is confident it can raise the funds in time. Of course, all this is in addition to the band's already busy schedule which includes a CD recording in July and several concert and contest appearances throughout the year."
The five-a-side football tournament has been provisionally set for Sunday 20 June and it will cost each team £25 to enter, with prize money of £100 to the winning team. Details of a venue are yet to be released, but should be confirmed very soon. Likewise a date has yet to be set for a Summer Ball, but United Co-op Yorkshire would like to invite any bands to join them for one giant Banders Christmas Party, provisionally set for Saturday 4 December.
Said Tabby: "Like many bands we always leave organising our Christmas bash until it's too late to book anywhere, so this year, we would like to organise a giant band christmas party with around 350 people attending. If anyone is interested they should contact the band and further details of all events will soon appear on the website."
The band has also set a date for a 24-hour sponsored blow which will commence on the evening of Friday 23 July. Anyone wishing to join in and have a bit of a laugh is more than welcome!
If anyone would like to take part in the United Co-op Yorkshire's fund raising events or find out more about the band and the New Zealand Brass Band Championships they can log on to the band's brand new website at www.unitedcoopyorkshirebrassband.com and they will find contacts etc on the site.
